ABOUT US

The Deep River and Area Food Bank is an incorporated organization.  Our primary aim is to provide food relief to individuals and families in our community who need our help.

The voting members of the food bank are our volunteers.  We are organized into a Board of Directors who set overall policies and rules and a Volunteer Committee where most of the day-to-day operations are decided.  The chair of the Board is Charles Packer.

We belong to the Ontario Association of Food Banks, and through them are associated with Food Banks Canada.

HELPING THE FOOD BANK

How do I make a donation of money?

Donations can either be dropped off in the box inside the Northern Credit Union office (envelopes provided), or mailed to us at Box 1015, Deep River, ON K0J 1P0.  We issue tax receipts for financial donations in amounts over $10.

We are not permitted to accept financial donations from our clients.

How do I make a donation of food?

Most of the local churches have drop boxes for nonperishable food items.  There are also boxes in the Deep River Town Hall, Fleury’s valu mart, the Deep River & District Hospital lobby, and DJs in Chalk River.  You can also bring food items to the Food Bank during our open hours. We accept donations of fresh garden produce, in season, during our open hours.

Are there food items that you do not accept as donations?

In general we are limited to foods that are pre-packaged and which have never been opened.

We cannot accept the following:

If in doubt about the acceptability of a donation please call us and leave a message.  We will get back to you.

What sort of work do the volunteers do?

We depend on a variety of skills and interests.  These include behind-the-scenes work such as administration, finance and publicity, and on operational work such as taking deliveries, stacking shelves, filling boxes and being responsible for the client relationships and the standards of operation cleanliness, professionalism, etc.

We are sometimes short of people able to do medium weight lifting and carrying for deliveries of food to the food bank, and occasionally for some critical administrative tasks.

All volunteers are required to sign a membership form committing themselves to our standards of behaviour, and we expect our volunteers to be reasonably regular in their support of the Food Bank.

How can I volunteer?

If you are interested in helping us please phone us on 613-584-2484 and leave a message.  We pick up our phone messages every day and someone will contact you.

FOOD BANK REPORT FOR 2011

WE SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR SUPPORTERS!

YOUR FOOD BANK HAS HAD ANOTHER BUSY YEAR

In 2011 we were able to provide more food to families than ever before. People come to us when they need to: 40% of clients made only one or two visits. A lot of our clients have children (44%). In all we helped 445 people including 170 children.

Our income and expenses were well matched through the year. The generosity of our community is outstanding and donations in almost all areas were up from 2010.

On the organizational side, we incorporated the food bank as a business (as recommended by the Ontario Association of Food Banks), we continued to work at getting our standards of service to the highest levels and we are privileged to have over 20 volunteers who together have put in about 2,000 hours of work.

USE OF OUR FOODBANK HAS TRIPLED IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS. WE VERY MUCH NEED YOUR ON-GOING SUPPORT.
