24 Hour Emergency Services

The Emergency Department at the Deep River and District Hospital provides 24 hour Emergency Services. The Department underwent extensive renovations in 1998 and boasts the latest in medical technology and diagnostic tools. Support services such as Lab and X-ray are also available on a 24 hour basis to support the Emergency Department as needed.

The Department is staffed by a physician on-call or on-site, and by Registered Nurses who have elected to focus on emergency nursing and have taken special courses specific to that area.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WAIT?

Welcome to the Deep River and District Hospital's Emergency Department. An emergency nurse will see you within 15 minutes of your arrival to assess your condition.

If you are experiencing chest pain or are having difficulty breathing, please alert the emergency nurse immediately.

How soon a doctor sees you depends on how sick or badly injured you are. For example, the doctor will see someone with a heart attack before someone with a sprained ankle or sore throat.

Patients are seen by a doctor in order of need, not time of arrival.
If your wait is longer than you expected, please understand that we are busy attending to patients who need immediate care. Sometimes we may also have to wait for a special room or equipment to be available before we can take care of you.

Please do not eat or drink.

If your condition worsens while you are waiting, please let the nurse know.

While you are awaiting

1. Have your Ontario Health Insurance card ready, or your medical insurance information if you live outside Ontario.

2. Have a list of all medications that you take on a regular basis and any other important information, e.g., allergies.

Before you leave
Before you leave, be sure that you understand the doctor’s instructions. If you are not sure, ask the doctor or nurse to explain them to you again.

If you decide to leave before being seen by a doctor, please talk with a nurse.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Laboratory Services:

The Deep River and District Hospital Laboratory provides a number of services for our clients.

Patients must have a signed requisition from a registered physician for any laboratory tests. Results will be sent directly to the ordering physicians office, either by courier, mail or fax. Results cannot be given directly to you or to another physician, unless we receive written instructions to do so.

Most of the laboratory tests are performed on-site, (usually the same day), and we have made arrangements with referral laboratories for tests not on our license. Specific containers are available through the laboratory for specialized tests.

The Deep River and District Hospital will process requisitions for blood work, x-rays, etc., regardless of where the physician who ordered your test is located. After the test is completed, we provide the physician (in Ottawa, Pembroke or elsewhere) with a written report. Tell you doctor you prefer to have the testing done locally.
