Admissions & Discharge

Admission to the Hospital

Planning ahead can help make your hospital stay more comfortable and stress-free. Please review the following checklist of what to bring, as well as what to leave at home, in order to ensure a smooth admission and stay.

What to Bring

To help us provide the best care possible, please bring the following items with you:

  • Your valid provincial health card
  • Photo ID that clearly shows your name, address, and date of birth
  • Proof of supplementary insurance coverage, if applicable (e.g., certificate or card with insurer name and policy number)
  • All current medications, including prescription and non-prescription/over-the-counter medications, in their original containers
  • Personal aids such as eyeglasses, dentures, or hearing aids (plus extra batteries)
  • Comfort items like pyjamas or a nightgown, a bathrobe, slippers, and a pair of sturdy non-slip shoes
  • Personal care items including a toothbrush, toothpaste, unscented soap and lotion, shampoo, a brush or comb, cosmetics, and shaving items

What to Leave at Home

To prevent loss or damage, we strongly encourage you to leave the following at home:

  • Valuables such as jewelry, rings, watches, or sentimental items
  • Large amounts of cash or important personal documents

Discharge Planning

Most patients stay in the hospital for an average of three to five days. Once you no longer require hospital-level care, returning home with the right supports in place can promote a faster and more comfortable recovery.

Planning Ahead

Start thinking about your discharge as soon as you’re admitted. Your healthcare team will work closely with you and your family to:

  • Develop a personalized discharge plan
  • Arrange any necessary community supports or services
  • Provide instructions and prescriptions you may need at home

Please ensure someone is available to pick you up or arrange transportation prior to your discharge date. Before you leave, double-check that you have all your belongings and written instructions.

If you have any questions or concerns at any time, don’t hesitate to speak with a member of your care team. We’re here to help.
