Position Summary
 
Clinical Externs are employed as unregulated care providers, working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, to enhance and effectively support safety and quality of care for patients and residents at Deep River and District Health (DRDH). This program is open to clinical learners including students of nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and paramedic programs. This provides them with opportunities to apply their knowledge, develop important skills for a career in health care, gain patient care experience, and to work with and learn from our nursing and allied health team.
 
Position Relationships
 
Reports to the Manager of Clinical Services – Acute Care; works in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team and within established reporting structures. Provides care as per identified care plans and goals of care, under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN).
 
Duties:       
    
  • With direction and oversight of the RN, participates in implementing a plan of care that promotes the optimal physical, social, spiritual and emotional well-being of each patient/resident.
  • Observes and reports changes in patient/resident physical, mental or emotional status as they occur.
  • Performs basic personal care procedures and skills in accordance with the patient/resident’s needs and care plan under the supervision of the RN.
  • Promotes independence and safety by supporting Activities in Daily Living (ADL), by assisting with personal hygiene, dressing, transferring, toileting, use of ambulation aids and exercising for patients/residents. These activities include but are not limited to:
    • Bathing and dressing, shampooing hair, mouth care (routine and special), skin care
    • Meal service and feeding assistance
    • Reporting meal and snack intake - Intake & Output as applicable to the Registered staff
    • Grooming including nail care, (except in diabetics) and shaving
    • Ambulation with or without aids
    • Lifting and transporting patients/residents using mechanical devices as applicable
    • Positioning patients/residents as applicable
    • Observing patients/residents and reporting any changes or unusual occurrences, ie, rashes, scalp problems, bruised skin or scratches to the charge nurse
    • Providing physical assistance to patients/residents as required
    • Answering call bells and door alarms within three (3) minutes whether or not on assigned caseload.
    • Caring for incontinent patients/residents routinely & when required.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment including making beds (occupied and unoccupied) and cleaning bedside units and the resident home environment, including collecting and bagging soiled linen for transportation to laundry, sorting and storing clean linen, emptying & carbolizing bedpans & urinals, removing of unsafe objects from use and reporting same, cleaning of patient/resident equipment.
  • Assists in maintenance and proper care, cleaning and storage of nursing and patient/resident equipment.
  • Uses correct body mechanics to prevent strain, injury or fatigue to self or to the patient/resident.
  • Protects the rights of the patients/residents and family members in matters of confidentiality, privacy, beliefs and values by adhering to the Residents’ Bill of Rights.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to the philosophy, goals and objectives and policies of the organization.
  • Performs patient/resident care related duties as directed by the RN.
  • Reports all resident and employee incidents or complaints to the RN.
  • Other duties as assigned. 
Qualifications:
 
  • Currently enrolled in and/or have completed one of the following:
    • Any year of an approved baccalaureate nursing program
    • Any year of an approved practical nursing program
    • Completed the second year of the paramedic program
    • Completed a minimum of one semester of an occupational therapy program
    • Completed a minimum of one semester of a physiotherapy program
    • Completed second or third year of a respiratory therapy program
    • Internationally Trained Nurse (without a CNO license)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach certificate preferred.
  • Education and training related to dementia and geriatric care preferred: included but not limited to Montessori, restorative care approaches, palliative care, etc.
  • Recent clinical placement in Acute Care and/or Long-Term Care setting preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Resident’s Bill of Rights.
  • Demonstrated dedication to provide person-centered care using person-centered language and approaches.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill working with individuals with various types of dementia, delirium, mental health, additions, other neurological conditions, and those who experience an acute behavioural change.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act and Regulations and, more specifically, policies and procedures related to Zero Tolerance for Abuse and Neglect, Restraints and Prevention of Violence in the Workplace.
  • Initiative, sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a high functioning team.
  • Customer and quality service orientation.
  • Produce high quality work while meeting deadlines.
  • Effective prioritization and organizational skills.

Position Summary:

The Physiotherapist provides high-quality, person-centered physiotherapy services across both hospital and long-term care settings. This includes assessment, treatment planning, intervention, education, and documentation for patients and residents with diverse medical, surgical, neurological, and geriatric needs. The Physiotherapist works collaboratively within the interdisciplinary teams to support mobility, rehabilitation, recovery, and quality of life.

 

Position Relationships:

Reports to the Manager of Clinical Services – Long-Term Care and communicates and interacts with the healthcare team including physicians, other staff and managers, students and volunteers.

 

Duties:

  • Examines clients and develops treatment plans to maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability for clients to enhance optimal quality of life.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures.
  • Supports and demonstrates the mission, vision and values of the organization.
  • Other duties may be assigned and may not be limited to the scope of an individual department.
 

Qualifications:

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario required.
  • Degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited institution (Bachelor’s or Master’s level).
  • Eligible for membership with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association
  • Current Basic Rescuer (CPR) Certification required.
  • Approved Ontario Assistive Devices Program Authorizer for mobility aids an asset.
  • Experience in hospital and/or long-term care settings an asset.
  • Knowledge of geriatric care principles and interRAI-LTCF or interRAI tools preferred.
  • Proficient in electronic documentation and clinical systems.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management, organization, communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated resilience, empathy, and professional boundaries while providing compassionate care required.
  • Ability to think critically, problem solve, and apply evidence-based practice in clinical decision-making.
  • Exceptional attendance required.
  • Must agree to adhere to DRDH standards of behaviour.
