Rights & Responsibilities

We believe every resident has the right to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. The Residents’ Bill of Rights, as outlined in the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, is a cornerstone of resident care and helps ensure that each person living in a long-term care home in Ontario is protected, valued, and heard.

What is the Residents’ Bill of Rights?

The Residents’ Bill of Rights is a legally recognized list of rights that every long-term care home in Ontario must uphold. These rights are intended to ensure that residents receive high-quality, person-centred care in a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment.

The Bill of Rights includes, but is not limited to, the right to:

  • Be treated with courtesy, respect, and dignity
  • Make choices about your care and how you live each day
  • Participate fully in decisions about your care, programs, and activities
  • Live in a safe, clean, and home-like environment
  • Be free from abuse, neglect, or discrimination
  • Maintain your independence and individuality
