Position Summary

The Senior Financial Analyst will be an integral member of the financial reporting team performing a range of professional accounting activities including analysis and reporting of organizational financial results, including assistance in the preparation of financial statements for the year-end audit. The Senior Financial Analyst will work autonomously to analyze financial results and work with Managers to interpret and present the financial impact of operational decisions as well as identify areas of process improvement by providing evidence-based information to execute decisions and monitor results. The Senior Financial Analyst will review processes and identify/implement changes as required to ensure efficient, timely and quality information reporting as well as a wide range of professional accounting activities.

 

Position Relationships

Reports to the Executive-Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Works closely with executive leadership team and management.

 

Position Responsibilities:  

 

Month End and Financial Reporting

·         Prepare monthly journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations and ensure that adjustments/corrections are made as necessary

·         Review and analyze monthly financial and ensure its accuracy and compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS)

·         Prepare monthly and quarterly financial summaries for distribution to Senior Leadership explaining and analyzing material variances

 

Review, Analyze and Present Program and Business Unit Results

·         Prepare comparative analysis against budget and historical results

·         Identify key operating drivers and perform benchmarking analysis

·         Present findings at monthly/quarterly reviews with leaders

·         Work integrally with managers to achieve higher levels of performance and improved patient care through focused use of strategic information, resource measurement and evidence-based decision-making

·         Champion action plans for meeting budget targets and developing forecasts

 

External Reporting

·         Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual Ministry reporting submissions for Hospital, Long-term Care and Primary Care

·         On an annual basis, prepare organizational external financial statements, and coordinate with departments to prepare the notes to the financial statements and supporting schedules

·         Assist in the preparation and filing of various returns to statutory agencies

 

Budget Development

·         Work with Vice-Presidents and managers to lead development of the annual capital and operating budget

·         Advise, train and educate organizational staff at all levels regarding budgetary planning, information systems, Management Information Systems (MIS) standards and data quality

 

Treasury

·         Prepare and analyze monthly cash forecasting and provide recommendations to ensure the organization meets its key liquidity ratios

·         Prepare bank reconciliations and implement process improvements as necessary

·         Investigate, analyze and resolve bank discrepancies

·         Record weekly and daily bank activity in the general ledger

 

Other Duties

·         Research and prepare accounting briefing notes for complex accounting issues

·         Innovate new ways for data collection and analysis

·         Learn and master Management Information Standards (MIS)

·         Participating in special projects or committees as required

·         Identify opportunities for process improvement to help streamline current processes

 

Qualifications

·         Qualified Accountant (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) with 3-4 years post-qualification experience in financial analysis, reporting, month end close, process improvement and treasury related work

·         Expertise in financial planning, budgeting and analysis

·         Expertise in financial reporting and control management

·         Demonstrated in depth knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards for Not-for-profits

·         In-depth understanding of the current healthcare funding models is desirable.

·         Knowledge of MIS standards is desirable

·         Advanced MS Office skills– Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook

Physical Demands

·         Perform well in moderate to high stress situations

·         Bending, and lifting of objects

·         Requires intense visual, listening and mental concentration for moderately long periods of time

Working Conditions

·         Frequent interruptions with changing priorities

Accountabilities

Hours of Work

  • As required to fulfill duties and obligations
  • Full time 37.5 hours/week
  • Part time as assigned
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to take calls-ins and on-call
